The Ikombe Project
The Adorata community has dedicated the past year to helping 40,000 villagers in the region of Ikombe, Kenya, which has been devastated by drought and AIDS, and by the poverty, starvation, and orphaned children that have resulted. Together, we have raised over $50,000, enough to build an entire water system that provides the only safe drinking water in the entire region, a truck to serve as an ambulance, a vehicle of aids education, and a crucial tool for food transportation, and AIDS education, and numerous deliveries of emergency food relief. We have also provided a generator to pump potable water from the only well in the region and the piping to deliver it to the community and irrigate the land for food crops.
Previously, women and children in this region walked over five hours in scorching heat to retrieve contaminated water dug out of the mud in this drought-stricken region, which exposed them to cholera and parasites. Even worse, the women were vulnerable to rape each day during this arduous task.
The complex water system provided by the Adorata Ikombe Project has already resolved this situation, and all of these successes are only the first phase of our relief operations in Ikombe, Kenya. Next, we are preparing a large fundraising campaign to provide the people of Ikombe with the livestock, agricultural resources, and training necessary to make them completely self-sufficient. When these strong and capable people can once again produce crops, crafts, and drinkable water for their own consumption as well as for sale at regional markets, they will no longer rely on our charity for their survival.
